Type 2 Diabetes, does it cause hair loss?

Hair loss is one of the phenomenon people fear the most especially among female population. Hair loss could be due to hereditary reason: such as male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Some researchers have attempt to decrease DHT by chemical inhibition to stop the hair loss. Some hair loss is due to deficiencies in the immune system. Stress and insomnia often cause hair loss and this could be explained by the compromised immune system. There are a lot attention given to the hair loss among diabetes patients as more people are diagnosed in the recent years.

A recent study (2012 Oct 13) published in Medical Hypotheses which is a peer-reviewed journal by Elsevier

suggests that “hair loss might be a manifestation of metabolic abnormalities particularly hyperglycemia (diabetes)”. And went on suggesting patients that admitted to the hospital with hair loss should be screened for diabetes or pre-diabetes. Diabetes adversely affects the blood circulation especially in the peripheral area such as scalp. Improper and lack of blood supply to the follicles, which bring less nutrients to generate healthy hair growth, is generally believed to be the reason for hair loss in diabetes patients. many would-be diabetes patients report unusual amount of hair loss in the pre-diabetes phase. The fullness never restores as the disease progresses.

The trend of hair loss can be prevented by proper management of diabetes. Here are some additional ways to increase hair growth and prevent unnecessary hair loss:

  • Wash hair gently with a diabetes-friendly shampoo with lukewarm water: hot water will hasten the hair loss.
  • Always wear gloves to prevent your nail to cause unnecessary damage to the follicles which may cause infection: nail contain bacteria and sharp nail will cause injury to the scalp.
  • Never blow-dry and air-dry instead: hot air cause hair loss by taking away the needed moist for your follicles.
  • Try not to dye your hair too often.
