Diabetes Patients Educated with Chef Chris Smith!

Diabetes Patients Educated with Chef Chris Smith

The Diabetic Chef®, Chef Chris Smith, is determined to educate people with diabetes  and their families about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle and how both impact diabetes.

After being diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 27 while attending the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Chris realized that the primary way in which he could control diabetes for himself and others with diabetes  was by formulating a new lifestyle. This new lifestyle included meal and food preparation and managing an exercise program.

Chef Chris strongly recommends that you put together a team to help you manage your diabetes. Heading up your team is your endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in the management of hormone conditions. The medical specialty of endocrinology involves the diagnostic evaluation of a wide variety of symptoms and variations and the long-term management of disorders of deficiency or excess of one or more hormones.

Chef Chris also recommends that your support team include “a diabetes educator, who may be a nurse, nurse practitioner or registered dietician, plus family members for support and advocacy.”

Chef Chris is a Certified Executive Chef with over 20 years experience in the culinary field focusing on healthy cuisine.  He is highly regarded as Contributing Editor and Advisory Board Member at Better Homes and Gardens Diabetic Living Magazine and author of 2 published cookbooks which include meal planning and food preparation for diabetes patients. The book titles are The Diabetic Chef’s Year Round Cookbook and Cooking with The Diabetic Chef.

As a nationally recognized public speaker on healthy cooking, The Diabetic Chef® has confronted many myths about diabetes.

“I frequently hear people say can’t eat sugar because they have diabetes,” says Chef Chris. “The truth is that sweets and desserts can be eaten by people with diabetes if they are part of a healthy meal plan combined with exercise and good carbohydrate management. I am always telling people to read the food labels and check with their physician or registered dietician first to figure out how to include sweets in their meal plan.”

“Another general complaint I hear is that I can’t eat anything,” says Chef Chris. “I usually tell them to use the nutritional MVP approach: Moderate, Variety, Portion Control. Then I advise them to change their grocery shopping list to support their lifestyle changes.”

“Questions I’m frequently asked are What can I have? and What can’t I have? when I’m going out for dinner,” says Chef Chris. “Most everyone has no concept of the amount of calories they consume  at a restaurant. I usually advise them to take the time and do more cooking at home using fresh and natural foods.”

Chef Chris Smith does not see the diagnosis of diabetes 2 as the end to a good life but rather he regards the diagnosis as an opportunity to apply a healthy lifestyle to the rest of your life.

“When you can clearly identify the healthy style for yourself you are also influencing your family to lead the same lifestyle. My goal is to empower people with diabetes so that they can lead active lives and control their diabetes.”

We are pleased to let you know that Chef Chris will be our Special Guest TV personality on our 6-day Royal Caribbean “Living Well” Cruise this coming January. For more information about the cruise check out our website at www.diabetesdailypost.com.
